One of the great plays of the modern era returns to the National Theatre, with two of the most striking actors of the moment leading. Forty years on from Christopher Hampton's celebrated adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's eighteenth-century novel, Marianne Elliott — director of Angels in America and War Horse — brings it back to the National Theatre stage.
Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) plays the Marquise de Merteuil: master of survival, mistress of the long game. Aidan Turner (Rivals, Poldark) is the Vicomte de Valmont — her former lover and chief weapon. Together they turn seduction into strategy and desire into a weapon. When their alliance collapses into rivalry, the battle between them threatens to destroy everyone in its orbit.
Filmed live at the National Theatre and screened at Cinemarsh in New Romney: JAM's second NT Live presentation, continuing a long-running partnership with the marsh's independent cinema.
