Nicholas Cleobury - Conductor

Nicholas Cleobury is Associate Director of the Orchestra of the Swan, Founder and Conductor Laureate of the Britten Sinfonia, Principal Conductor of the Oxford Bach Choir and Artistic Director of the Sounds New contemporary music festival in Canterbury.

He has conducted all the leading orchestras of Britain and Ireland, including those of the BBC and abroad has worked in Australia, Singapore, USA, South Africa,throughout Europe and Scandinavia and appeared at major festivals, including the BBC Proms.

His extensive operatic experience includes conducting English and Welsh National, Glyndebourne, Opera North, Wexford, ARCAL (Paris), Canadian, Chicago Opera Theatre, Flanders, Gothenburg, Hamburg Staatsoper, Malmö Musikteater, Royal Opera Stockholm, Zurich Opera and productions for Aldeburgh Festival and the English Bach Festival.

He has given countless premieres and has collaborated with the world's foremost composers such as Bennett, Birtwistle, Henze, Ligeti, MacMillan, Maxwell Davies, Tippett and Turnage. Prominent new music ensembles he has conducted include Aquarius, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Fires of London, London Sinfonietta, Die Reihe (Vienna) and Opera Nova (Zurich).

For several years Principal Conductor of the Royal Academy of Music Opera in London, Nicholas Cleobury continues to devote time to students, working with such talented ensembles as the Southbank Sinfonia, Guildhall School of Music & Drama New Music Ensemble and Birmingham Conservatoire's Thallien Ensemble.

A regular broadcaster, his many commercial recordings include an award winning Richard Strauss disc with the Britten Sinfonia and recently released recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Future plans include appearances with the RPO, Orchestra of the Swan, London Mozart Players, a tour of South Africa and projects for Sounds New.

In 2006 Nicholas Cleobury was made an Honorary Fellow of Canterbury Christ Church University.

Nicholas became a JAM Panel Member in 2003.
