Tom Wilkinson talks to JAM about the forthcoming concerts in Scotland

Being part of JAM’s tours of Scotland is one of the major highlights of the year for St Salvator’s Chapel Choir, the flagship choir of the University of St Andrews.

The choir and I have to start the academic year running in order to have the music ready to perform by late October! Last year, many choir members found the repertoire very challenging to start with, but it was great to observe their appreciation of the music grow as the rehearsals progressed. This year, I think it’s fair to say that everyone has been more receptive to the music from the word go, which is a very good sign. I am really looking forward – with just a little trepidation! – to playing the organ for the concerts and, following the rehearsal last Saturday, I think we’re on track to equal or even exceed last year’s success.

A particular highlight will be the world premiere of Rory Boyle’s ‘Tallis’s Light’ tonight in Holy Trinity Church, St Andrews – this roller-coaster of a piece is very challenging for the performers, especially rhythmically, and will be hugely effective.
