Stephen Layton to conduct JAM in '05
Internationally respected conductor, Stephen Layton, has agreed to direct JAM's first two concerts of 2005. He is renowned for his exceptional musicianship and for the vitality of his performances.
Layton is Founder and conductor of Polyphony, Music Director of the Holst
Singers and Director of Music at The Temple. He is also Principal Conductor of
the Netherlands Chamber Choir and Chief Guest Conductor of the Danish National
Choir. Recently, Layton has collaborated with composers such as Sir John
Tavener, Arvo Pärt and Thomas Adès and given first performances of their music.
Stephen Layton works with the City of London Sinfonia, the Academy of Ancient
Music, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Scottish Chamber
Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Britten Sinfonia.
Layton's discography includes music by Adès, Britten, Cornelius, Grainger, Gretchaninov, Holst, Macmillan, Pärt, Rutter, Schnittke, Tavener and Walton on labels including EMI, Decca and Hyperion. He received a Gramophone Award for his 2001 Hyperion recording of music by Britten.
