Alan Charlton - Submitted 2004
Born in 1970 in London, Alan Charlton started composing at the age of six. He studied at The Royal Academy of Music and the University of Bristol and his composition teachers have included Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Judith Weir, Robert Saxton, Raymond Warren, Adrian Beaumont and Gareth Walters. He was the first ever recipient of a PhD in Musical Composition at the University of Bristol and from 1999-2002 became the first Eileen Norris Fellow in Composition at Bedford School. Notable performers and commissioners of his music include The Lindsays, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Bernard Gregor-Smith and Yolande Wrigley, the Ebony-Kwartet, the Pro Arte Guitar Trio and Mikkeli City Orchestra, Finland. He has received commissions from Harrogate International Festival and Music in the Round.
